The Society was founded in 1922 as an organisation for all makers living in Herefordshire. We arrange public exhibitions for our members, and sponsor an annual lecture on art history at The Courtyard kindly given by Professor Allen Fisher (Professor of Poetry & Art and Head of Department of Contemporary Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University).

The Society organises presentations where we can discuss our work in a sympathetic environment. We also have a long running Life Class. Our annual subscription is low and we have a policy of non-selection for joining members so that artists of different abilities are able to enjoy the public showing of their work alongside perhaps more experienced makers. We have found that confidence and experience gained in this way tends to feed back quickly into practice. We have a policy of inclusivity to all.

One of the society’s objectives is to invite those interested in the arts, especially those connected with Herefordshire, to exercise their patronage in support of the Society.
